Evaluation-7
Looking back at your preliminary task, (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
When looking back at our preliminary task, i feel as though we have progressed strongly and learnt many new techniques in the process and have more of an insight on how to produce a more successful piece of media. I feel as though i have progressed my camera work, editing ability and my knowledge of using technologies altogether. I think this shows through our work as the improvement from the preliminary task is huge.
Whilst making our preliminary task, it was a chance for us to experiment, make mistakes and learn from these mistakes. This gave us the foundation of what we needed to do and how to use the software and equipment we would need to use for our final project.
The preliminary task is not as adventurous or as experimental as it could have been whereas, in our main task i feel as though we have created a more exciting piece which we put more effort and time into the main task.
Camera use: Within our preliminary task we were instructed to the camera angles 180 degree rule, match on action and shot/reverse shot. This allowed me to have a better understanding as to how to shoot these angles correctly and why they are used in media products.
However, when it came to filming our final project, we decided to use more of a variety of camera angles and use ones that were suited to our genre of 'horror'. This helped to develop my camera skills. To find the camera angles that were often in 'horror' based films i watched horror clips to see. Many were 'distorted' and uncomfortable to watch, provoking the right atmosphere.
I have increased my editing skills from our preliminary task as when we made our preliminary task we uploaded our footage and added a title to it and also added some simple effects, but we did not spend too much time editing our preliminary task on Premier pro elements 7.0.
The techniques that i have learned from both of these tasks may help me in the future and have helped me to have a better understanding of how to cope with the difficulties of technology and how to overcome this.

Evaluation-6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I feel that through producing our media project I have learnt many things about the technologies we used and how they are used to construct media products.
The technologies we used in order to create our product were:
- Sanyo Xacti Camcorder
- Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0
- VLC Player
- Blogger
- YouTube
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Word
- Paint
- Computers/Internet
We used two Sanyo Xacti Camcorders in order to film our project. We learnt how to use the camcorder properly and how to gain the camera angles wanted and learnt new techniques in order to create a creepy atmosphere. Premier elements pro 7.0 helped to develop my editing skills and helped me see how to overcome issues when using the software in order to produce a successful project. It taught me how to solve problems and how to work them out.
Blogger is the website where we have create weekly blogs on our progress and the work in which we have done, where i am writing now. It helped me to present my work in a variety of ways to how i please.
We used YouTube greatly to help us create a successful blog. We used YouTube at the beginning of our project to find good video's for our deconstructions which relate to our chosen genre. We managed to find 4 that were suitable to compare. We also used YouTube to make our project public and also to make it able for us to put the final clip onto our blogs, moreover, to annotate our final video easily using the annotation option on YouTube.
I used Microsoft excel and Microsoft word to create the graphs for the results of our two questionnaires. This was a simple, easy way to produce the graphs successfully in order to put them onto my blog.
Evaluation-5
How did you attract/address your audience?
We managed to address our target audience as we managed to upload our final video onto YouTube meaning that our video could be shared. Here is the link for our annotated version of our product, we used the annotation tool on YouTube to do this. We have explained how we have attempted to attract our audience.
We were able to attract our audience as our film was closely related to others that already exist, meaning people who like these films will be attracted to watch ours.
Evaluation-4
Who would be the audience for your media product?
This is an example of our target audience. She is young, likes unusual things and fits into the ages of 15-20. She seeks new thrills and new scares, making her perfect for our new 'horror' film. She would wear more alternative clothing and enjoys watching films and socialising. She fits in with our previous expectations of our target audience which we found through our target audience questionnaire. Although we are aiming our project at this particular target audience we hope that it will appeal to many other people who will enjoy 'horror' films.
Evaluation-3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A production company is generally involved in producing either recorded or live entertainment. most think of the production company as involved in funding, helping to facilitate the making of, and distributing films and/or television programmes.
Most often, the production company for films and television provides the money, and thus sets the budget, and may also make decisions on what director, and actors can be hired. Budget often makes other decisions possible or impossible. A low budget film may not be able to be filmed in a remote location, for example.
A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for releasing films to the public either theatrically or for home viewing (DVD, Video-On-Demand, Download, Television). As well as the development of the production, meaning that me and my group members can be considered as responsible for the development and physical production for our product.
There are many very well known and popular film distributors such as: Universal studio's, 20th century Fox, Paramount and Warner brothers. However, we would be more likely to use a distributor who especially distribute horror films. For example Lionsgate; Who have distributed such films as Saw, The punisher, Skinned alive and the Alien films.
Also, we used 'Saw' as one of our previous opening scene deconstructions, and we see that lionsgate were their distributor. This comes up near the beginning of the opening scene and is clearly shown, so we would be related and competing with 'Saw' which is something we wanted to achieve so it is a good idea to choose this distributor for our project.
The distributor would be included in the titles and many other names such as:

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Because our film comes under the genre of 'horror', it does not have any particular social group. This genre was designed to frighten an audience and to create fear within them and build up on suspense. So, does not fit into any typical social groups.
Our film can although, be comparable to a few already existing 'horror' themed films. Popular ones such as The Grudge, Saw, The Ring, Orphan and The Shinning.
Here is an image of the little girl from The Ring, she plays a main role in the film, we have compared her with the little girl from our own film. Samara is the name of the little girl (left), and the little girl from our film (me) is on the right. There are similarities of both of these characters as they both have been traumatized in the past, both by adults, Samara by her parents and the little girl in out film by the strange man at the parents funeral trying to comfort her. This makes them become very 'messed up' and distorted. In return to this both of the little girls take revenge on their trauma's. Samara makes a video tape, which, when watched will kill you in seven days, killing her mother. However, the little girl in our film follows the man until he becomes a nervous and paranoid wreck, until, finally brutally murdering him whilst walking his dog in the woods.
The costumes are also similar, as they are both wearing white dresses, showing purity of a child, contrasting with the evil that is within them. They both have dark tired looking eyes and hair over their face's as well creating an effect that the characters are very closed in and want to hide away from everyone and everything.
There are however, differences between these two main characters as they play different roles according to the storyline. But the appearance is very much alike, apart from the blood on the white dress of the little girl in our film, there is no blood on Samara's white dress in The Ring.

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
We used 2 different locations in order to create our opening scene.
1- The church
2- The forest area
Both of these settings were successful in gaining a dark, creepy atmosphere to create suspense within the audience, however, we found the scenes in the church scene to be a little too dark when we actually put the footage onto the disc. We maybe should have chosen a more brighter setting to film our scenes of the little girl. Although, when we decided on the location of the church and after overcoming the lighting problem on Premier elements we felt that it created a very successful location to fit the conventions of our 'horror' theme and made it feel extremely tense, creepy and have a sense of fear of the 'unknown'.
For our opening scene we had to use a variation of costumes and props. For example we used:
A white dress (torn and customized)
Fake blood
A big coat (torn and customized)
Make-up and face paint
We used these props to the best of our advantage in order to gain the real conventions of a 'horror' themed film. We used these props to gain effective characters for our film to make sure they had an effect over the audience and to create tension and fear to fit our genre.
Our camera use was successful as we did not want a straight, normal view, we wanted to make the film feel 'Distorted' so that the audience felt tense and didn't know what to expect from the strange angles and camera use. Also fitting in with the conventions of our genre, although, may not be the most conventional use of camera.
We decided to use a cluse-up shot of one of the main characters (the little girl) in order to make her feel distinguished to the character and to get feel as though she is in the room with the audience and communicating with them. It also helps to indicate the emotion of the main character to the audience so that they have a better understanding of the girls 'Distorted' nature.
To complete the editing of our opening scene we used Premier elements 7.0, we used this as best as we could to gain the most effective editing to fit in with our genre. We made it skip from scenes very quickly which made it uncomfortable for the audience making them on edge. which is what we wanted. We made sure that the video however, ran smoothly but still conveyed distortion throughout.
The genre we decided upon for our film was 'horror'. The features we used in our project reflect this genre successfully as it contained gore, blood, frightening events, suspense, fear and disturbing images. We gained this through using diferent and eriee locations, creating creepy/horrific characters and flickering scenes and strange camera angles.
Characters are introduced through out the first scene, but the audience are unaware of who they are in the story as our opening scene is a falshback to the grousome events wiithin the film. So, this does successfully conduct the conventions of our chosen genre 'Horror' as it flashes between unknown, gory details of future events to come in the film.
We feel as though we have fullfilled the typical conventions of a 'horror' film meaning that we were successful in developing a clip with the real conventions of 'horror'. Therefore the audience can relate our film with already exsisting films of this genre.
The title of our film is 'Distorted' This is to show the distortion of the little girl in the film and to make the audience aware of what sort of events may occur through out the film, as you can see, the title appears on the last stage of the clip then onto a plain black backgroung, to make it stand out to the audience. We thought that this title would fit in well with our theme of 'horror'. We used a bright colour over a plain black background for the end where we see the title of the film so that it clearly stands out to the audience before they carry on to watch the rest of the film. Also, the colour red represents the blood and gore within the film, fitting in with the conventions of horror as it contains much gore, blood, anger and death, just as our film does.
Shots 1, 4, 5, 7 and 9 show the setting of the forest area and gives a clear view of the costume we used for this scene. Shots 3, 6 and 8 show the other setting we used which was the church stairs. This shows some more of the costumes we used and the inclosed space we had to work with in order to gain the right footage. This made it difficult to use any props or a tripod to help with the filiming. This also wouldn't work as we had to move the camera round the sairs as I walked down them, so a tripod would have been a struggle and unnecessary.

Film Editing.
To edit the footage we had taken we use Premier elements 7.0 which allowed us to upload our footage on there and edit it how we pleased without being too complex for us to use. It is also the only software available to us at the school that is simple enough for us to use.
We thought that editing our film would be fairly simple, but when it came to the editing we occurred a number of problems. The first problem we came across was that the church scenes were too dark to see once on the screen. We managed to get the lighting right for the cameras on the stairs, however, on the computer we just could not see the image we had hoped. Luckily, we managed to edit the lighting so that we could see the image by changing the contrast, saturation and brightness, we had to make sure that they were all in the right positioning to gain the right lighting we wanted to see the image.
Once we had fixed the issue of the lighting on the church scene, the next stage of the editing process was to cut the clips we had filmed and delete that parts which we were not going to use in our opening scene. We then had to fit our scenes in the order we thought would work best, we flashed from scene to scene to give the 'Distorted' feel we wished to achieve.
The next step of our editing process was to change the lighting and effects on each part of our film to how we wanted. We decided to make the scenes fairly dark to make our film more eerie and gloomy, making the audience feel uneasy whilst watching our film as people tend to feel more on edge if the image they are watching is dark rather then bright and colourful, which would make them feel no fear and more comfortable while watching it as nothing would be out of the ordinary.
Here is an example of this and how we made it like this effectively. It took us a while to work out how to achieve the effect and colouring we wanted from the film and we had to try different alteration in order to do so. We also, had to gain the same effect through every scene in order to keep the effects balanced through out. To gain the effects and colouring we did, we had to change the contrast of the image, the brightness and the saturation. We had to get these three controls in certain places to get the right colour and effect. This also made the blood look more realistic and less bright creating a more grousome image.
The next part of our editing was to add our 'fuzzy screens' to our footage. We added this to create a weird, unknown element to our opening scene. These screens create suspense for the audience as they do not know what will happen next. To do this, we added a blank screen to our clip wherever we knew where we wanted the 'fuzzy screen', then went onto effects and added 'noise' to the blank screens. This was more colourful then what we wanted, so we then had to change the colouring of this to make it darker and more creepy. To do this we had to change the contrast, saturation and the brightness once again.
Started the editing again put our group back a bit, however, we managed to use the existing edited clip as a guideline to us starting again, we managed to use the previous music plan sent to mateusz for the music to get the times of the clips exactly the same as the previous clip. Working together and using the existing editing we managed to get it done very quickly and were able to add titles to our opening scene.
We then added the title of our film 'Distorted' to our opening scene in a red writing to represent blood and the gore within the film, showing the audience what they should expect from the rest of the film. We placed it on the final part of our opening scene over the image of the dead man but the title then moves onto a plain black screen making the title more vivid and clear to the audience creating a memorising image of the film title. We chose to use the font 'Papyrus' as it is easy to read but also fits in with our film as it has an aged effect and slightly different to plain text.
Once we finished all these details we decided to finally add the soundtrack for our opening scene. This is an important part of our opening scene as it creates the overall effect of the opening scene creating the finishing atmosphere. To add the music to our clip we went onto 'get media' and selected 'from files' then choosing the sound file we planned to use and dragged it into the software onto the the timeline of our clip putting it in place with our footage. The music and sounds fitted well with what we had composed, showing that our timeline/music plan we sent to Mateusz worked in order to make the ambience right in our opening scene.
Once we had completed our editing we then had to render the clip onto a disc. By rendering it, it will become smoother to the eye and be made into one movie rather then different sections. Our opening scene will then be completed.
The next part of our editing was to add our 'fuzzy screens' to our footage. We added this to create a weird, unknown element to our opening scene. This was more colourful then what we wanted, so we then had to change the colouring of this to make it darker and more creepy. To do this we had to change the contrast, saturation and the brightness once again.
When it came to the next stage of our editing process, we occurred yet another problem to overcome. We next wanted to add the title of our film to our opening scene, for some reason premier elements would not allow us to do so, and every time we attempted to a message would come up and then terminate the programme altogether. This became an issue for us as we found it hard to continue with our editing. We went to ICT support for advice on how to solve this. We tried many different ways of trying to overcome this issue, but none of them seemed to work. The ICT support were unsure as to why this was happening. Due to this problem we had to start over again on another account, as the titles seemed to work on other accounts. We tried to send the editing we had already worked on to another account, but this was also unsuccessful.
Started the editing again put our group back a bit, however, we managed to use the existing edited clip as a guideline to us starting again, we managed to use the previous music plan sent to mateusz for the music to get the times of the clips exactly the same as the previous clip. To create the graphs from our audience questionnaire I made them on Microsoft excel then copy and pasted them onto paint to make them the size i wanted and to save the image of the graph only.
Question 1;
From this graph we can see that we asked people mainly of the age range of 15-20. This is because we had limited access of people to ask and mainly asked people within our year and group to answer the questionnaire. This age group Is our around the age of our target audience anyway, meaning we get to see what our target audience thought of our opening scene.
Question 2;
As we can see from this graph, we were successful in making our opening scene the genre 'horror' as a majority of the people who watched the clip thought it did fall under the genre of 'horror'. The rest of the people asked, however, thought it was a 'thriller', the genre 'thriller' is closely linked with 'horror' in a sense as they are both meant to be tense, thrilling and shocking.
Question 3;
As we can see from this graph, all the people we asked to watch the clip believed it to be rated either 15 or 18. This means we were successful in making our film for over 15's and for 18+.
Question 4;
This graph proves that we were successful in making sure that the title was clearly shown. As 100% of people said that yes, the film title is clearly shown. This is good as people will then be able to know what the title is very clearly.
Question 5;
This graph shows us that a majority of the people who watched our opening scene thought that it did work well as an opening scene. This is what we hoped and has worked well for us.Question 6;
This graph shows us how most people felt scared while watching our opening scene, the rest said that they felt suspense and felt uncomfortable. This means that we were successful in achieving the elements of 'horror' in our opening scene.
Question 7;
This graph tells us that we were successful in creating effective costumes and make-up. Most of the people who saw our clip thought that all three ( make-up, the hair and the costumes) were effective. Nobody said that none were effective, showing that we made sure that these elements were effective.
Question 8;
This graph shows us that the settings we chose were successful in creating suspense and contain an erie feeling. This is what we hoped to gain through choosing our settings.
Question 9;
This graph shows that more people thought the editing to be more aesthetically pleasing then people who didn't. However, it also shows us how we could have improved on the editing as it was close. We asked this question to gain knowledge as to whether or not our editing was successful.
Question 10;
This graph shows that a vast majrity of the people who watched our clip thought that the music did fit well with the opening scene. This means that our music was successful and did go well with our footage. meaning that we were successful in making the music and sounds go well together in our opening scene.
Question 11;
This graph shows us how most of the people who saw our opening scene would want to carry on wathcing the film to see what happens, this is good for us because we now know that people would want to see the end result of our film. The main reasons for yes, they wanted to watch the rest of the film were:
- Curious to know what happens
- Looks like good story line
- Questions to be answered

The Plot.
Distorted
The opening scene of our film is a flashback to the terrible events which take place in the film.
The little girl in the story’s parents died in a car crash on the way to a lake and she managed to get out of the crash alive as she was small and could climb out of the car before the car exploded. The little girl then has to live with her aunt who takes her to her parent’s grave for the funeral of her parents and meets a shifty looking man there who is trying to comfort her over her loss, she begins to notice he is gradually moving her away from her family and tries to walk away politely, but then the man gets violent towards her and drags her into the church. She struggles as he drags her up the church stairs where no one is about, the church stairs are dark, cold and frightening, she hits her head on one of the concrete stairs causing her to pass out. The man panics as he thinks he may of killed her, she starts to move slightly but doesn’t come round, he abuses the little girl violently and then leaves her on the church stairs not knowing whether she would live or die.
After this event, we see some of the mans life and how he lives, however, he begins to see the little girl everywhere he goes, guilt fills his life. Every time he saw the little girl she disappears again. This becomes very creepy and jumpy. Then one day, he walks his dog through the woods on a gloomy day then we see the girl following him, she stabs him and the dog runs away, he struggles and begs her not to kill him, after stabbing him she thinks he is dead but then he grabs her foot as she is walking away, she then turns around in fury and stabs him in the head, she drops the knife on the floor and it bounces by her feet, she got her revenge. The End.
We thought that by making our opening scene a flash back the audience will want to carry on to watch the film and find out why the man had died and what had happened to the little girl to make her like this.
The story is fairly graphic and contains the features of a horror film, the thought of someone watching you all the time will make the audience feel uncomfortable and nervous. The parts where the little girl appears would be jumpy scaring the audience. And also, there is gore in the film as she stabs him. It has a physiological aspect too as the little girl has been abused to a point of turning against everything and murdering the victim,This is what is needed to make a successful horror film.
Film Title.
We had to decide on a title for our film which would fit in with our theme of horror and to fit in with the events of our story, we put all our ideas onto a brain storm so that we could see which one was the best idea. We have decided to put a title in our clip as then people will know the name of the film early on and because when we deconstructed our horror clips 'The grudge' and 'SawVI' they had included the title of the film within the beginning of the film, we are trying to create a successful horror clip like these ones.
We came up with ideas linking to our plot and film, these ideas were successful. The one which we chose was 'Distorted'. This one we thought fitted in well with our film as the little girl is distorted and disturbed. It could also be seen as the dead body is distorted and in a weird position in our opening clip.
Music Plan.
When it came to sending our clip to Mateusz so that he could fit in the music he wrote with our film clip, we realised we could not send the files to him in order for him to make the music fit properly, so to overcome this problem we had to produce a timeline with a brief description to show him what we wanted where, after receiving this i had to explain in a bit more detail which each bit meant.
This plan of the music helped to create the music for our video and has solved the problem of not being able to send our video from school. We put the times into milliseconds so that it was precise to make sure the sounds came in at the right times otherwise the music would sound out of place and wouldnt fit together as a whole piece.

The Filming.
Camera use; 11th Janurary 2011
Whilst filming our media we made sure that everbody in the group had a turn to film and work with the cameras. We took out two cameras to gain different angles and shots of the same object and so that two people could be filming at once, we thought it was fair that everyone used the cameras, and we all then took part in the filming. To create the creepy atmosphere we wanted we filmed in seperate clips in different locations in attempt to make a succesful horror.
Whilst filming in the church stairs we realised that we had a problem to overcome as the lighting was too dark for us to film. To solve this, we had to go up high on the stairs so we were closer to a window giving light through, but also we used some battery run candles to put on the stairs, this gave us just enough light to film but was also safe, we chose not to use real candles as this may have been a hazard, one of us could have got burnt or knocked the candles over. It was very steep and cold while filming this scene so we tried to achieve the best shots we could on that day. We had to re-film this part a few times, but we did get footage successful enough for us to use and gained what we had hoped.
The filming within the forest area also had it's problems to overcome, as the floor was cold and damp the character of the injuried/dead body would get very cold very quickly, meaning that the person playing the character (sarah) may have become ill, so we also tried to get the footage we wanted that day to overcome this problem. Once again, we had to take a few takes, but we achieved the footage we wanted in the end.
Therefore, we do not need to film anymore as this one day of filming was successful enough for us.

Camera Angle - Planning.
We have decided to use three main camera angles in our film. Eye-level, oblique angle and a low-angle. These angles we think will be best for our clip as they fit in well with the theme and with our storyboard.
We chose to use the eye-level camera angle as this camera angle is at the same level as the human eye, giving the effect that the character is watching the audience, this can make the audience feel threatened and can feel much more real for the audience. This can also make the audience feel as thought they are there and can create understanding in the audience. We plan to use this for the close-up of the little girls face whilst she is whispering, creating a much more direct feel.
We chose to use the oblique camera angle, this angle represents madness and disorientation. This works well with our film as we intend to make the audience feel frightened and uncomfortable to make sure we make a successful horror film. This camera angle is titled on an axis with the lens aimed at an object, this shows instability and can leave fear in the audience. We are planning to use this angle for the dead body on the woods floor, to create an illusionist atmosphere as to what is happening.
We chose to use the low-angle, this angle is achieved when the camera is positioned lower then the action taking place in a scene with the lens aimed up at the subject. This is used to symbolise power and authority, we are planning to use this shot when we film the little girl walking down the church stairs, this will create an effect that the little girl is the opposite to what she seems but is in fact inferior and the audience will then gain a sense of fear from this character and have to look up at her.

Storyboard - The initial idea.
This storyboard was created as a very basic and simple plan for us to follow whilst making our film. It gave us an idea of the order we were going to film and how we wanted it to turn out. However, when we made he film we did make some changes to this initial idea as we thought of better ideas and things turned out slightly differently, this was bound to happen as this is only and initial idea.
When the first shot begins we see the first location which we chose to use, creating a calm effect which keeps the audience relaxed to begin with, then it moves on to dead person lying on the floor the audience are shocked and will be curious to know why and how this person died. Next there is a shot of bare feet walking through the woods, creating suspicion as to who this is and is it the killer? however the feet are those of a little girl creating more curiosity.
Next we see the second location which we chose to use, the church stairs, the fast change of location makes the audience more on edge as to what is happening and creates an unsettling feeling. From then on the scenes flash from one location to another with a fuzzy screens making the audience feel insecure and tense, we also see the little girl on the stairs, making the viewers wonder why she is in the church and how she got there, we see the blood on her dress making us think she might have killed the victim as it flashes from her to the victim on the floor.
With all the tension of this, our initial plan hopefully will help us to acheive a successful horror film clip as we follow the layout and change what we think would work best as we go along.

The Script.
There is no conversation between our characters in the opening scene, so there is not a script as such, however, the only speech within the clip is the little girl whispering the nursery rhyme 'if you go down to the woods today'. This gives another sense on innocence and creates confusion as to why she is hurting people. The whispering sound is soft yet very creepy and is capable of giving the audience shivers. These kind of reactions are what we want from our audience.Although there is no speech, there is continuous music through out our opening scene. The music was written by our friend studying music studio technology at university (Mat Tuora), we asked for certain sounds and to have an eerie version of the tune of 'if you go down to the woods today' in the background. We found this very successful and fitted well with what we as a group wanted and with the film. The sounds within the piece of music are extremely creepy and make the audience feel uneasy. There are high pitched noises and screeches within the music.
Because the tune we used within the music was not written by us, we had to consider copyright (Copyright is the exclusive right granted to the author of an original work) as the music music as it had been composed by somebody else. So i researched into this and found out that the tune we are using in the background 'Teddy bears picnic' is part of the public domain, means the piece of music is openly available to everyone and not subject to copyright protection. Many other children's nursery rhymes are part of this. Usually people who wish to use their work will have to give the request to the publisher of the piece unless the the copyright owner is someone close to you whom you know. But as i found out that this piece of music is in the public domain, it was not necessary to do so and we could use it in our work.
