A production company is generally involved in producing either recorded or live entertainment. most think of the production company as involved in funding, helping to facilitate the making of, and distributing films and/or television programmes.
Most often, the production company for films and television provides the money, and thus sets the budget, and may also make decisions on what director, and actors can be hired. Budget often makes other decisions possible or impossible. A low budget film may not be able to be filmed in a remote location, for example.
A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for releasing films to the public either theatrically or for home viewing (DVD, Video-On-Demand, Download, Television). As well as the development of the production, meaning that me and my group members can be considered as responsible for the development and physical production for our product.
There are many very well known and popular film distributors such as: Universal studio's, 20th century Fox, Paramount and Warner brothers. However, we would be more likely to use a distributor who especially distribute horror films. For example Lionsgate; Who have distributed such films as Saw, The punisher, Skinned alive and the Alien films.
Also, we used 'Saw' as one of our previous opening scene deconstructions, and we see that lionsgate were their distributor. This comes up near the beginning of the opening scene and is clearly shown, so we would be related and competing with 'Saw' which is something we wanted to achieve so it is a good idea to choose this distributor for our project.
